Topic: Involving Voluntary non-UCCS Research Personnel

Preamble: This page is dedicated to involving voluntary non-UCCS research personnel on your team.

Involving Personnel
    • Yes!  Bringing minors to campus, however, requires following special rules. Contact Debi O’Connor who can help you navigate the process. We also highly recommend you reach out to the Director of our UCCS Pre-Colligate Support and Success Center https://pcssc.uccs.edu/ to discuss the opportunities for high school students.
    • Helping your recently graduated students to continue to grow their research skills is a great idea as they transition to their next career stage. We do however, want to make sure that liability and access to campus resources are covered and to do this, you’ll want to work with HR and your administrative assistant to appoint this person using a LOO.  For example, you might want to appoint them as a Professional Research Assistant (job code 1310) if they hold a bachelor’s degree or as a Sr Professional Research Assistant (job code 1309) if they hold a master’s degree. see this template.

    • Another option you can use is the Person of Interest (POI) function to appoint an individual to a non-paid role (volunteer) within the university.  A POI is any person not paid by the university, such as a volunteer, who needs access to a university system as part of their relationship with the university.  The first step in the process is to visit the HR UCCS Document Library via Document Library | Human Resources (uccs.edu) and scroll down to the ‘Adding a Person of Interest (POI)’ section.  This will take you to the HCM step-by-step guide on how to add a POI.  Further down in the Document Library is the ‘Maintaining a POI Relationship’ guide.  Next, the different IT system accesses of the POI are outlined by the Office of Information Technology (OIT) via POI Accounts | Office of Information Technology (uccs.edu)
    • Involving our local community is a great idea to build partnerships and strengthen our connections. Please first reach out to the Director of Partnerships (Jen Furda)  as she is our community liaison and she can serve as a great resource. Because we need to make sure that liability and access to campus resources are covered, you’ll want to work with HR and your administrative assistant to appoint this community member using a LOO.  For example, you might want to appoint them as a Professional Research Assistant (job code 1310) if they hold a bachelor’s degree or as a Sr Professional Research Assistant (job code 1309) if they hold a master’s degree. see this template.

    • Appointments to the Research Professor series must be sponsored by an academic primary unit or by research institutes that have been authorized by the Chancellor to make such appointments. Appointments sponsored by research institutes must be co-sponsored by an academic primary unit that will be a beneficiary of the instructional contributions of the research faculty member. For an example letter of offer, see this template.
